The one and only collectors gripe about the new modern Explorer II Ref. 226570, and some of the earlier modern variants has to do with the case sizing being too large at 42mm. I was allotted a new 2021 Explorer II (226570) today and posted some rough dimensions in another thread. I thought I would follow up with some more detail. All measurements taken with digital calipers and a kitchen scale.
Rolex has touted that the Chromalight displays have been enhanced for longer luminosity in dark conditions and to appear brighter in the light. Case and bracelet proportions have been finely tuned for the 42mm size, and the cal. 3285 ticking inside is a great GMT movement that has proved itself in the Explorer II's cousin, the GMT-Master II . Dimensionally, as mentioned, the Explorer II measures in at 42mm across, which for some is simply too big. But, because the case is relatively slim at 12mm thick, it does wear smaller than you may think. In fact, the Explorer II is a full millimetre slimmer than a Submariner Ref.116610 . and you can tell.
